What can they do and how can I help? 1-2 years old

What skills develop between 1 and 2 years?

These are some general abilities you should expect to see your child accomplish between 1 and 2 years old. Your child should be producing more words every month and beginning to put two words together (“more milk” “daddy book”). Other skills developing include:

  • Points to some body parts

  • Follows one-step directions and understands simple questions (“Where’s your shoe?” “Go get your dolly’)

  • Listens to and participates in simple stories, songs, and rhymes

  • Points to pictures in books when named

  • Uses some one- or two- word questions (“Go bye-bye?” “Where dada?”)

  • Uses many different consonant sounds at the beginning of words

What can I do to help my toddler’s skills develop and build between 1 and 2 years old?

  • Talk while doing things and going places. Point to familiar objects.

  • Use simple phrases.

  • Play with sounds (Airplanes say “v-v-v-v,” clocks tick “t-t-t-t”).

  • When your child says one word, expand on it! Repeat what they said while adding another word.

  • Read, read, read!
